Yearly home maintenance is an essential part of every homeowner’s life. Some of you might think that forgoing maintenance for a few seasons may save you some money. But that’s an error that can cost you repairs and replacements BEYOND your expectations.

In addition, that can also deteriorate your house’s value and make the interior seem underwhelming to live in. When potential buyers see such conditions, they’re more likely to either not buy your home or be willing to pay a price way lower than what you demand.

Admittedly, it can be daunting and slightly confusing to understand every task an ideal seasonal home improvement can involve. And if you’re a new homeowner who still hasn’t grasped the maintenance essentials completely, here’s a quick guide, especially for you. Below we list an inclusive home improvement checklist that you must follow- and when needed, get experts to accomplish.

1. Test Smoke Detectors

The first step is checking your smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, circuit interrupters, and carbon monoxide detectors. You never know when an unforeseen disaster may strike. And if you want to keep your loved ones as safe as possible, you need to ensure that the fire detecting and preventing systems are in workable condition. Ideally, you must inspect their functionality once every three months and replace batteries, buy new extinguishers, or fix the detectors right away.

2. Check The Drainage System

Clogged bathrooms and kitchen sinks might not seem like massive nightmares initially. However, the issue can escalate when the constant blockage results from clogged gutters. Therefore, it’s crucial to check if your drainage and pipelines are running without a hitch.

You can look for water puddling near your garden and keep flushing your toilets and running water- especially in guest bathrooms that you seldom use. You must also check for and clean possible debris and dead leaves that may accumulate after rainfall or during the winter season.

3. Look Out For Mould Infestation

Often, homeowners might not realise that there’s mould inside their property until it’s too late. The fungal spread is common in several states of Australia due to its humid and moist climate. Once developed, it can result in runny noses, allergies, lung infections, and even be hazardous for cancer patients. Therefore, you need to inspect for possible mould growth every two to three months. Additionally, your house may go through water damage, or you may have recently bought a new house that was previously unoccupied for a long time. Such instances can signal higher chances of mould problems in your property.

Furthermore, it’s not just your interior that can grow mould. Your sheds and gardens can also become the perfect breeding grounds, primarily due to leaking gutters or fallen dead leaves. So, don’t forget to inspect such spaces too.

4. Inspect The Aircons

Summertime in Australia can be intensely suffocating and hot. Imagine finding out that your aircon wouldn’t work- now that’s plain torture! So, you must inspect your HVAC system before the summer season approaches and schedule repairs and maintenance to make sure your interior remains comfortable and pleasant. You can try cleaning the filters by yourself. However, it’s better to get professionals like Sun City Air conditioning Brisbane to observe for air leaks and fix everything that may cause trouble later.

5. Maintain The Garden

Leaving your gardens disorganised and unkempt can reduce curb appeal and even encourage pest contamination. Preferably, you must mow the grass weekly, water plants daily, and rake away the fallen dead leaves whenever necessary. Moreover, you must also fertilise the garden and spray pesticides at least five to six times during the year. If there are trees near your home, try trimming them and removing the dead shrubs that may fall any second and damage your windows, roofing, or clog drains.

6. Deep Clean

Although you may dust, mop, and sweep your house regularly, you must deep clean the interior at least every month or two. That includes scrubbing the bathroom, kitchen, furniture, and appliances, vacuuming the flooring, dusting the curtains, and wiping fans and windows. It kills germs from places you didn’t know could house so many bacteria and is a powerful tool to help you achieve a peaceful state of mind.

Final Thoughts

Home maintenance isn’t complex when you know the fundamental home improvement checklist. Hopefully, the six must-dos mentioned above helped you plan for your next property clean-up. Incorporating these vital elements will ensure that your property remains an inviting and comfortable residence for years to come. And remember, don’t ever hesitate to hire experienced staff to do the work and ensure maximum convenience for you, your loved ones, and your pets.

Happy home improvement!
