Maybe Crossovers Aren’t So Bad, After All?

Perhaps it’s just automotive Stockholm Syndrome, but soon after 15 a long time of tests vehicles, a enormous proportion of which have been crossover SUVs, I’m all set to say it: Crossovers are not so lousy.

Yeah, I know, you’re heading to talk to me to blink 2 times if I am Ok, but listen to me out.

Very first of all, I even now continue being a enthusiast of rip-roaring sporting activities cars, but let us encounter it – even for the duration of growth occasions, sporting activities autos are a tiny part of the current market.

2nd, I stay a steadfast sedan guy. I am NOT, to be very clear, suggesting I have abandoned that situation. I nevertheless obtain that sedans, specifically mid-sizers, can get the job done for quite a few drivers and their families.

Nor am I arguing below that crossovers are much better than wagons (couple of which keep on being), minivans, or overall body-on-body SUVs. It would be a fool’s errand to test to argue what segment of autos is the “best”.

I am simply stating that for all the crap that we fans and vehicle journalists fling at crossovers, perhaps only a modest bit of it is truly justified?

Once again, I get the arguments that wagons and minivans can do utility improved than crossovers and that crossovers only exist mainly because, for people of specified ages (especially older Millennials and most, if not all, of Gen X), wagons and minivans get unfairly written off as deeply uncool. And you know what? I am not going to argue that crossovers are “better” when it arrives to utility, driving dynamics, or even gas financial state. Generally talking, they aren’t.

But I am starting to fully grasp the charm. Most crossovers DO glimpse greater than most minivans, and when some wagons are sexy AF (on the lookout at you, Jaguar XF Sportbrake), most aren’t going to make me search at them the way Homer Simpson appears to be like at a pork chop.

Gasoline economy, or at the very least range if not mpg, is generally acceptable. I’ve given up hope when it arrives to sporty driving – number of crossovers do it very well, and even fewer do it properly without costing way too much – but most experience properly sufficient. Most are cozy, and most manage cargo just high-quality. I can see why men and women who have what marketers connect with “active lifestyles” and/or persons who cart all around a myriad of passengers and/or pets like them.

Crossovers just just supply a jack-of-all-trades stability, and some deal with to even appear moderately stylish. Minivans really don’t typically look cool (with apologies to our resident van supporter, Matt P.), and though wagons can switch heads, too lots of do not.

Never get me improper. I mourn the dwindling of the mid-dimensions sedan as substantially as anyone, and I consider that sedans can do more in terms of cargo and passenger hauling than most people understand. I nevertheless believe that mid-sizers have a location in the planet, and until practicality forces my hand, my up coming day by day will practically definitely be a sporty sedan of the compact or mid-dimension course.

I still will not argue that crossovers are the finest preference for most buyers. But if we’re likely to be trapped living in a crossover environment, perfectly, it could be significantly worse.
